~ 2012 Volunteer Award Winners ~

At the end of each year, ASTD-Orange County acknowledges all chapter volunteers, especially those who have who have made an extraordinary impact on our Chapter and professional community.

Award of Merit ~ Damion Donaldson

Given to a member of at least three years' tenure, who assumes responsibility for project leadership in the Chapter and/or national level. Someone who has served previously or currently as a Chapter Board member, Manager or committee member.

Damion Donaldson, as VP of Programs, has helped increase the chapter’s membership and visibility through outstanding programs in a two key areas: monthly learning events and workshops.

Under Damion's leadership, our monthly learning events have seen a marked increase in attendees. Our workshops have included Total Trainer; Powerful Presentation Skills; Tom Kuhlman and Articulate; and Dave Anderson and Advanced User Storyline. The programs have brought people from other chapters not only in southern California, but from states as far away as Texas and even Canada.

Damion brings exceptional enthusiasm and ideas, and is always ready to explore programs to bring to the chapter. Damion has been on the ASTD-OC board for the past three years and has been involved with the chapter for the past five years.

Chapter Torch Award ~ Cherry Kushner and Jolynn Atkins

A member who assumes responsibility for project leadership, has continual involvement in a variety of levels, has served as a Manager, Co-Manager or SIG Manager. Someone who works hard, volunteers readily and has a strong commitment to the Chapter. This year, we have two winners:

Cherry Kushner has lead the successful implementation of two workshops this year, Total Trainer and Powerful Presentation Skills. Leading the charge on one workshop requires many hours of dedication to prepare, help market, and support the classes. She lead two workshop kick-offs in one year, requiring time and dedication that demonstrated her commitment to the chapter. Her calm and reassuring leadership and has been an integral part of increasing ASTD-Orange County’s visibility and membership through the successful workshops.

Together with Anthony Harmetz, past-president of ASTD-OC, Cherry helped Total Trainer kick-off with a waiting list, and maintained a robust class-size of 25 people for the 10 week workshop. Powerful Presentation Skills followed the lead of Total Trainer and kicked off with a strong class. Participants have expressed their gratitude for her support and dedication.

Jolynn Atkins started the year as the VP of Marketing and was in the role until summer, when her job at as VP of Strategic Operations & Consulting Services, Escoe-Bliss, demanded more of her time. Jolynn continues to serve the chapter in the communications roles, helping to disseminate our monthly marketing messages for both print and social media.

Jolynn has been behind a number of innovative marketing implementations: she implemented the table displays to eliminate clutter on the tables and provide the info on upcoming events; she put together marketing kits for each event leader so that all the necessary marketing materials are at each event; she coordinated the design and production of the banner; she created a brand to our marketing materials. Jolynn has been a strong advocate for the chapter and we thank her for her commitment and energy!

Distinguished Service Award ~ Coline Son Lee

Given to A member who has been continually involved in numerous Chapter projects/programs and who has made a significant contribution in at least two of these projects/programs. Someone who has a strong commitment to the training and development profession.

Coline Son Lee joined the chapter in the spring and immediately asked how she could help the chapter meet its goals. Coline has an indomitable spirit and “can do” attitude and has helped the chapter not only reach its goals, but set some records. She was the force behind the CPLP virtual study program and grew the program from an idea to record-breaking accomplishments in six months.

This new CPLP program has had the highest program completion rate of any across the country (8 people), the highest percentage of people taking the exam (80%), and the highest exam pass rate (83%).

In her “spare” time, Coline took over the role of VP of Marketing and coordinated the marketing efforts for the monthly learning events, Advanced Storyline workshop, and Powerful Presentation Skills. We are thrilled that she will lead the chapter next year as President!

Teamwork Excellence Award ~ Website Team

Given for the first time this year, to an exceptional project team or functional committee who, by virtue of especially strong collaboration, provides a new service to the chapter or elevates an existing service to higher excellence.

The Website Team includes Aaron Abramowicz, Susan Schild, and Kristen Kiley, with an honorable mention to Denise Ross, Chapter Administrator. Acting as Website Manager is chapter VP of Technology Kathleen Ashelford.

A professional organization's website serves as its face to the world. For the last few years, ASTD-OC has been seeking a website solution that is cost-effective, reliable, and serves the needs of its members. In 2012, we realized these objectives, thanks to this team of volunteers. Together, they have implemented many improvements, including setting up analytics, defining better processes around the posting of content and communicating with stakeholders, developing a team training library, and laying the groundwork for a site redesign in early 2013.

Aaron Abramowicz is a Training & OD Specialist at Corinthian Colleges. He has served on the Website Team since July 2011. Before his career in Organization Development and Training, Aaron held several roles in the information technology industry.

Susan Schild is a Student Services Manager at Corinthian Colleges, and is completing her Ph.D. at the University of Phoenix. She has served on the Website Team since July 2011. Susan also served as Manager of Major Projects for 2012.

Kristen Kiley is a Training Specialist at the Bank of New York Mellon, and joined the team last April. In addition to her training experience, she has extensive background in web development and project management.

All of us who volunteer know the challenge of finding the time in our already busy lives. Volunteering as a team brings the added challenges of managing multiple schedules and geography, and so requires added dedication and determination. You’ve shown us how it's done! Many thanks for your fine work.
