A Brief Analysis of the Total Trainer

What a trainer does often depends upon one's point of view. A trainer analyzes performance problems. A trainer develops programs or documents. A trainer is a facilitator of discussions, a leader of activities. A trainer evaluates the transfer of learning. The Total Trainer does them all.

A key device in the Total Trainer's toolbox is the ADDIE Model -- a methodology of design that incorporates the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation of a training intervention. Let's take a brief look at what each of these components involves, and why they are important for the Total Trainer to utilize.

A -- Analysis: before a request for training is met, the reason for training should be clarified. Who will be trained? What do they know? What are they able to do? What should the trainees be able to do as a result of training? The primary result of a good analysis: a clear set of objectives that will provide measurable benefit to the trainees.

D -- Design: Once it is known what the trainees will be able to do at the end of the class, the Total Trainer needs to go about designing the training program. Bear in mind that materials aren't being created at this point, rather, the Total Trainer determines what those materials should be, and how they will be used. The primary result of a good design session: a completed design document that outlines the topics covered in class, the activities that will support the trainees as they learn the topics, and the method by which the Total Trainer will know the trainees have met the training objectives.

D -- Development: The Development phase involves the creation of content, filling in the gap between what your learners already know and your course objectives. In this stage the Total Trainer creates the training manual and/or accompanying job aids, as well as the activities in which the trainees will apply the skills that they need to utilize at their jobs.

I -- Implementation: Training materials in hand, the Total Trainer must determine how to implement them during the course. The Implementation phase usually involves piloting the training class, and may include a mini redesign and redevelopment phase to correct any gaps in the course design. An ideal result of the Implementation phase: a facilitator's guide.

E -- Evaluation: A common misconception is that course evaluation should only happen once the training is complete. Rather, the Total Trainer evaluates the training course at all stages in the process, constantly making sure that the objectives identifies in the Analysis phase are being met each step of the way.
ASTD-Orange County is pleased to announce the schedule for Total Trainer 2010.

ASTD-OC’s Total Trainer program is a series of nine workshops designed to help training professionals develop, facilitate and implement training programs. Students learn how to include structural design in their training material, how to analyze training needs, and, perhaps most important, determine if the client’s request is even a training issue. Taught by some of the highest caliber training professionals from the ASTD-OC chapter, the program takes participants from the initial needs analysis through the development of training materials, the presentation of training and conducting the final evaluations.

“I loved the variety of classes, and the uniqueness that each facilitator brought to the class,” says Kelli Burns, a Training Specialist at Canfield and Associates, of the Total Trainer program she attended last fall. “I’ll be able to use so many of these tools in my day-to-day work.” As a Subject Matter Expert – turned Trainer, Kelli was one of many who was able to apply the skills she learned almost immediately.

Perfect for Training Specialists, Instructional Designers and Training Managers not well versed in the ADDIE model of instructional design, the program is also excellent for Trainers who want to make a broad contribution to their department. “The program lived up to its name and made me a ‘Total Trainer’,” said one past participant.

“In addition to learning from the program material, participants develop access to a wonderful network of others in their profession,” says Anthony Harmetz, Past President. “Participants consistently tell me that developing contacts outside of their own organization is a fantastic fringe benefit they weren’t expecting.”

CPLP Certification

Do you have three or more years of experience in the workplace learning and performance field? Are you ready to take your career to the next level? If so, consider achieving recognition as a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP).

The CPLP is ideal for addressing career deficiencies that involve increasing and proving your skills and qualifications across the broader workplace learning and performance field and for helping you update or refresh your technical knowledge.

Many companies are looking for workplace learning and performance professionals with such a certification. ASTD-Orange County is establishing a Study Group to help you achieve that distinction.
