| Finding A Green Job |
 |
By 2040, experts estimate that 40% of the jobs available will be green. As a job seeker, you owe it to yourself to consider whether or not a green job is in your future. This e-book will help you make an informed decision and provide you with a path to green career success.
What is the landscape for green jobs now? Promising and growing – but still a small percentage of the total employment landscape. Despite the current economic downturn (this book was written in the spring of 2009), investment in green technologies and services has grown rapidly, and will continue to do so throughout the rest of the decade due to both private and public funding.
Where should you start? This e-book lays out a path for learning more about your skills, then helps you apply them to the emerging green market. The end result? A new green job for you! Let’s get started.
From "Finding A Green Job". It's full of useful tips and advice on how to structure your job hunt, create a resume, apply for jobs, and succeed in interviews. Click here to review the complete e-book.

| Do Research, Practice Before Job Interview |
 |
| Courant.com (04/11/07) ; Powell, Eileen AltCareer strategy advisers recommend that individuals going on job interviews do as much preparation as possible. Job candidates should begin by researching the company on the its Web site and on the Internet. Then, to brainstorm key selling points, compile a list of 15 or so responses to the question: "What value do I bring to a company, and why should they hire me?" Additionally, review the job description and tailor job-performance anecdotes to the description's details. Practicing is also a good idea; seek out Web sites that conduct "virtual interviews," or make use of career centers. During the interview itself, ask questions about the position and then discuss those priorities. Experts recommend letting the employer bring up salary issues, though once the salary range midpoint becomes evident, negotiate to stay above it. Finally, do not forget interview basics: punctuality, a professional demeanor--even on phone interviews--and a follow-up thank-you note.

| Lay-offs -- What's Next? |
 |
Rod Kempton, former Career Management SIG Leader
Our Orange County business /
ASTD community has recently encountered
significant lay-offs. Let’s recall
some helpful career management steps
for those affected.
Without going into detail about
why and how, I encourage you to honor
your emotional experience. Experience
any feelings of surprise, anger,
grief, or what ever and then actively
release any troubling feelings in order
to use that energy for your next steps.
In taking an inventory for your
resume’ update, I encourage you to
also look at your personal values and
attributes. Values are those core
motivators that direct our life, actions,
decisions, preferences, etc. Attributes
are those personal elements we implement
in doing the tasks requiring our
competencies, skills, knowledge, and
abilities. Example: Competency –
Communication; Skill – verbal presentations
to groups; Attribute – personal
charisma and energy used to give life
to the content and engage an audience.
Values and attributes help us describe
how we successfully use our competencies,
skills, knowledge, and abilities.
They also help identify the
environment that is our best fit. We’ll
talk more about this at our upcoming
SIG meeting.
There are a large number of
networking groups available in Orange
County. If you’ll contact me, I’ll
forward an electronic list to you via
email.
